A Street Art Masterpiece in Progress

Street Art in Reykjavik, Iceland

This construction barrier on Hverfisgata (near the Culture House) covers the now partly demolished skate park between Laugavegur and Hverfisgata (more pictures of the park here and here). I walked by this unfinished piece a few weeks ago. Later that week, I was lucky enough to walk by at the right time and catch the artists at work filling in more detail.

I swung by a third time a few days after that to see how it looked. It seems that the whole plywood barrier is now some sort of tribute to the park or commentary on it’s demolition. The first section on the left side depicts the skate park and some of its best pieces. Then comes a heart of some sort and what looks like the “after”(post-construction.) It’s a really fantastic work of art. If you have the opportunity to go check it out, do so sooner than later since it is painted on a temporary structure.

  1. This really is stunning artwork. I am reading guide books at the moment trying to plan the seven short days i will have in iceland later in the year, and your blog is showing me that there is so much to see just being out and about! This work will probably be gone by the time i get there so thank you for sharing 🙂 (or maybe i should say takk fyrir!)
