We had a slow morning, showering and lounging in the Grundarfjörður pool and tub and eating at the local cafe/museum/library before driving to Stykkishólmur. Just outside of Grundarfjörður, we stopped at the bridge over Kolgrafafjörður, which is a popular spot for land lubbers to try and see whales. We didn’t see any whales, but did see a pair of playful seals right by the bridge.
You may be familiar with Stykkishólmur if you saw The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, since the title character ends up in this town at one point. It’s a really cute little town. From the top of the hill by the harbor, you get a great view of the 2500+ islands found in Breiðafjörður, many of which are teeming with birds, seals, and huge diversity of flora.
Then we drove across the rest if the peninsula on the gravel road 54, took 60 and 61 to Hólmavík. From there we cut across the base of the Westfjords so we could wind our way up the fjords on the east side to Ísafjörður. We mostly spent the day in the car, but the views were absolutely fantastic.
