ÍS: Lava Fields & Other Rugged Spots

Lava Field, Iceland On the way to see the Surtshellir lava tunnels. The gravel/dirt road to the caves led us up through some pristine lava fields covered in faded-green moss and into the edge of the rugged highlands.

  1. On our visit to Iceland in June, we were impressed by the lush, mossy ruggedness of the lava fields. Days later we visited the Kjarvalsstadir branch of the Reykjavik Art Museum and spent a good part of the afternoon enjoying Johannes Kjarval’s paintings of lava fields. If you can’t make it to the museum, it’s worth a google image search. The paintings are unique in subject and style and deepen the memory of the fields.
