Riga, Latvia (City Center)

Riga, Latvia After a lovely day in Tallinn,  we took a several hour bus ride through the countryside to Riga, the capitol of Latvia, where we stayed for two nights. Old Riga, the medieval part of the the city, was very similar to Old Tallinn. I enjoyed walking around Old Riga, but City Center, just outside Old Riga, was my favorite part of our 3 day trip. Latvia was under Soviet control until 1991. Downtown is a intriguing mix of old pre-occupation facades, Soviet architecture, and evidence of the cultural renewal taking place in the last 20 years.  (Photo above: Freedom monument)

Riga, Latvia  Latvia was occupied both by the Nazis and the Soviets in the 20th century. We spent a while in the Occupation Museum in Old Riga, which had extensive and thorough exhibits detailing those years. Really worth a visit if you are interested in knowing more about Latvia. We also stopped into the KGB Building, home of the notorious secret police until Latvian independence, and the Jewish Museum. I really enjoyed Riga and I would definitely go back and spend more time there given the chance. (Photos above and below: Esplanāde)
