The last picture in this post is the steep, stair garden leading to the home of Matthías Jochumsson, writer of Iceland’s national anthem. There are a handful of “poets’ houses” in Akureyri, where homes of famous Icelandic writers are now preserved as little museums. They take their poets seriously here. Also, those lovely yellow bushes were in bloom all over Akureyri. They were so pretty and smelled fantastic. I will say, Akureyri in the summer smelled great. There were so many flowers and trees everywhere flourishing in the city’s warm (-er than the rest of the island) climate.
