ÍS: Eccentric Autos of Akureyri

Akureyri, Iceland I have a lovely bit of story to accompany this gorgeous little Citroën. The owner was a handsome Dutch man in his late 50’s or early 60’s. He had owned the car for 20 years, and it was his primary vehicle, in addition to motorcycle. He had just parked on the campground when a hitchhiking young couple and I gathered around him to politely admire the car and ask him about it. “How old is it?” I asked. He laughed. “Which part?” The car had been added to and repaired so many times since the oldest part was made in the 60’s that it could have been that Johnny Cash song “One Piece at a Time.” He told us that he did all his own repairs on the car, and had taken it on many adventures, like his current trip around the island. The ferry from Denmark land in Seyðisfjörður (on the east coast of Iceland). During the summer, you’ll see a lot of foreign cars and motorcycles on the road, all having arrived on the ferry. The Dutch Citroën driver gone north east from the landing site. He would drive down to Reykjavik, where his wife was meeting him two weeks exploring the island. I’ll have another great “bring your vintage car to Iceland to travel around and do cool things” story coming up once my posts reach the south coast.Akureyri, Iceland

One More Batch of Vintage Wheels

Reykjavik, Iceland My regular readers may have noticed that I get into subject-habits. For a while, I was rather fixated on finding all the street art in Reykjavik, but as the summer approached, my attention was shifted to all the beautiful old cars the locals bring out to show off in the short period of good weather. Here is the last set of photos I took of Iceland’s snazzy retro rides.

Even More Retro Cars….

Reykjavik, Iceland The latest batch of snazzy retro rides: 1. Mercedes 200 series mid-1980  2.Ford Fairlane or Galaxie  1961-1964  3. 1966 or 67 Ford Mustang  4. Porsche 911 Targa (1990’s?). Many thanks to my dad for identifying all these pretty cars for me. The Benz is my favorite. My dad used to drive a not so spiffed up ’85 350 diesel, so this orange one made me smile and think of him.

Reykjavik’s Vintage Wheels

Vintage car in Reykjavik, IcelandNow that the days are longer and full of sunshine, Icelanders are taking advantage of the clear days to show off their vintage cars. Sit anywhere on Laugavegur (the main drag, where one-way traffic inches along, making for great car and people watching), and you’ll see at least one or two beautifully restored classic cars. I’ve taken to keeping a small disposable film camera on me at all times in readiness, since I love old cars and trucks. Here are a few from before the Easter Holidays.  Vintage car in Reykjavik, Iceland
